She brings over 10 years of experience to the field of mental health. Cheryl attended the University of Lethbridge Bachelor of Arts in Psychology program in 2004. She began her career in mental health by assisting families whom had a child that had been diagnosed with a developmental disability, to navigate through the struggles presented to not only the child but to the family systems as well. Continuing along this path she became a Program Supervisor at a local not-for –profit organization supporting families with children diagnosed with a disability. Cheryl furthered her studies by completing the Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology Program at Yorkville University in 2012. She completed clinical work with Alberta Health Services through the Diversion Services Program; working with a client population of young adult offenders who were believed to have mental health complications to rehabilitate them back into society with healthier coping skills. She then gained a position within Alberta Health Services under the Regional Collaborative Services Program (RCSD); a partnership position between Alberta Health Services and the Southern Alberta Rural school divisions designed to bridge the gap between community and school mental health programming. In addition, she has worked with several organizations through contract work on implementing behavioural treatment plans both within the home and school environment, parenting assessments, risk assessments, functional behavioural assessments and many other Psychological based assessments used to screen, diagnose and devise treatment plans for individuals experiencing difficulties with managing their mental health. Cheryl currently holds a position within Alberta Health Services at the Centre for Mental Health and Addictions in Claresholm, Alberta, where she works as a Psychologist in the Concurrent disorders program; an inpatient program working with a client population whom have been diagnosed with both a mental health disorder and an addictions disorder concurrently. Cheryl believes in an eclectic approach and with meeting the client where they are at. She believes that people do well if they can; meaning if they are struggling it isn’t simply because they don’t want the change but perhaps because they don’t have the tools to make the change or know how to navigate the process. She believes in aligning the client with their true values and with helping them to get “ curious not furious ” about the presenting situation and how the clients own behaviours May be playing a role in the situation; in other words “ lets put the client back in the drivers seat of their own lives by focusing on what they do have control over in their own lives”. She believes in learning and growing from the challenges we are faced and in promoting resiliency through validating our experiences and using our past as a guiding post rather than a hitching post. “ Our past does not define us as individuals, our current behaviours and what we do on a consistent bases speaks more about ourselves”.
